The second-generation Cosmo, called the Cosmo AP (Anti-Pollution) in Japan for meeting the strict 1976 emissions standards via a thermal reactor, the Mazda RX-5 abroad, and in some markets the Mazda 121 for the piston version. A personal luxury car on the Luce floor pan with a five-link rear suspension and rear disc brakes, first as a fastback with three side windows and from early 1977 as the notchback Landau (Cosmo L, with an opera window and padded vinyl roof), inspired by the Lincoln Continental. It sold over 55,000 in Japan in its first year and, the page says, effectively saved Mazda from financial disaster, competing with the Crown, Cedric, Gloria and Galant Lambda. The 12A and 13B two-rotors were available; the piston Cosmo 1800 (VC, 100 PS) and Cosmo 2000 (MA, 110 PS, from March 1977) sat at the bottom of the range. The 13B manual reached 195 km/h. Exported 1975–78 (in the US 1976–78 with the 13B, replaced by the RX-7); Series II (1979–81) was Japan-only. The short-lived Roadpacer sedan was rotary-only.

We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Years before anyone had a GPS in their pocket, this Eunos Cosmo had one built into the dash — it was the first production car anywhere with built-in satellite navigation.

The HB Cosmo is one of only two cars in history sold with a buyer's choice of gasoline, diesel, or rotary power — and it was the last Cosmo ever exported.

The Celica XX, Japan's name for the A60 Supra, introduced the world's first in-car navigation computer.

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
