FactThe Mark VI brought back a four-door body style Lincoln had not offered on this line since 1960.
The Continental Mark VI is a full-size luxury car manufactured by Ford from 1980 to 1983 and marketed by Lincoln-Mercury, the fifth generation of the Mark series and Ford's flagship: the first complete redesign since 1972 and the first to downsize, on the Ford Panther platform shared with the Lincoln Continental (renamed Town Car for 1981). Alongside the traditional two-door it introduced a four-door sedan (last offered in 1960). It is rear-wheel drive with body-on-frame construction and coil springs at all four wheels, 800 lb lighter and nearly 14 inches shorter than the Mark V, and the only Panther-platform version on two wheelbases: 2-door 114.4 in (216.0 in long, 55.1 in high) and 4-door 117.4 in (219.2 in long, 55.8 in high), 78.1 in wide, 3,892–4,219 lb. To comply with CAFE the 460 and 400 V8s were replaced: the standard engine was a 302 cubic-inch V8 (the first Ford V8 with throttle-body fuel injection, marketed as 5.0L), 140 hp at 3600 rpm and 231 lb-ft at 2000 rpm for 1980–83, with a 351 (5.8L) Windsor at 140 hp at 3400 rpm and 265 lb-ft at 2000 rpm offered for 1980 only, both with the 4-speed AOD overdrive automatic. It had hidden headlamps, oval opera windows, the Continental tire trunklid, the SecuriCode keypad entry, digital instrumentation, a trip computer, EEC III engine management and "Touring Lights"; the 1981–83 cars carried the VIN prefix 1MR (Continental) rather than 1LN. Trims were the base, the Designer Editions and the flagship Signature Series (successor to the 1979 Collector's Series, offered in coupe and sedan from 1980). Production totaled 131,981; for 1984 it was replaced by the Continental Mark VII.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
