The Continental Mark IV is a personal luxury car marketed by Lincoln from the 1972 to 1976 model years, the third generation of the Mark series, which grew over the Mark III and competed nearly exclusively against the Cadillac Eldorado. As with the Mark III it shared its chassis with the Ford Thunderbird (sixth generation), with its own bodywork below the windows; the roofline, doors and inner body panels were shared. It kept the "long-hood, short deck" proportions, hidden headlamps, faux Rolls-Royce-style grille and Continental spare (the real spare was behind the rear seat), on a 120.4 in wheelbase, 228.1 in long, 79.8 in wide, 53.5 in high and 5,264 lb (1976). It introduced the opera window (nearly universally specified in 1972, standard from 1973). All Mark IVs had the 460 cu in (7.5 L) 4V Ford 385-series V8, rated 365 hp SAE gross in the Mark III and carried over, with rated output falling to 212 hp SAE net for 1972 under the industry shift to net ratings (202 hp at 3800 rpm and 356 lb-ft at 2200 rpm at 8.0:1 compression for 1976), with a Ford C6 3-speed automatic and Lincoln's "Sure-track" anti-lock rear brakes. The 1973 model got revised front bodywork for 5-mph bumpers and 1974 a rear 5-mph bumper. For 1976 the Designer Series option package was introduced, with coordinated exteriors and interiors by Bill Blass, Givenchy, Pucci and Cartier (each with the designer's signature on the opera window and a 22-karat gold-plated dash plaque). A total of 278,599 Mark IVs were produced (48,591 in 1972, 69,437 in 1973, 57,316 in 1974, 47,145 in 1975 and 56,110 in 1976), at Wixom, Michigan; for 1977 it became the Continental Mark V.

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
