FactThe F44 shares its hood and fenders with the unrelated F40 1 Series hatchback despite wearing a 2 Series badge.
The first-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé (F44) was revealed on 16 October 2019, premiered at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show and launched worldwide in March 2020, with production running to 2024. It uses the front-wheel-drive-based UKL2 architecture, so despite its name it is mechanically unrelated to the F22 2 Series coupé, and it shares its hood, fenders, dashboard and suspension with the F40 1 Series. Engines were turbocharged three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel units; the 228i was offered only in Canada and the United States. It was succeeded by the F74 in 2024.

The second-generation 2 Series Gran Coupe (F74) was revealed on 15 October 2024, with production at BMW's Leipzig plant starting in November 2024.

This was a first for BMW: the G42 2 Series Coupe is the first BMW ever designed by BMW's Mexico studio, and it's built at BMW's plant in San Luis Potosí.

The G42's M240i kept a turbocharged inline-six manual-adjacent character but this generation dropped the manual gearbox entirely, automatic only.

The F44 shares its hood and fenders with the unrelated F40 1 Series hatchback despite wearing a 2 Series badge.

BMW badged this Gran Coupe a 2 Series, yet it is built on the same front-drive platform as the 1 Series hatch.

BMW built a stripped-down M235i Track Edition with a locking diff and no power seats or sunroof to save weight -- Canada got just 50 of them.

More F22 2 Series coupes were sold in America than anywhere else on earth — a third of the whole model's sales, ahead of Germany and Britain.

The Celica XX, Japan's name for the A60 Supra, introduced the world's first in-car navigation computer.

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
