Before the 99 Turbo, turbocharged road cars were temperamental specialist machines. Saab's 1978 family car was the first ordinary turbo anyone could actually drive daily since the 1962 Oldsmobile Turbo Jetfire.

Saab's first 99 prototype was a 96 cut lengthwise and widened 20 cm, nicknamed Paddan, "the toad".
