Tucked under this Altima's hood was a genuine first: an engine that could change its own compression ratio on the fly — the world's first production-ready variable compression turbo.
The L33 Altima dropped its 6-speed manual gearbox from the sedan lineup entirely, Nissan said flat out that too few buyers were ordering it.
The L32 Altima was the first Nissan sold in America on the smaller Nissan D platform — the same underpinnings that would later carry the Maxima and Murano too.
This Altima grew so roomy that it actually out-measured the pricier Maxima inside — forcing Nissan to push the 2004 Maxima upmarket into a bigger class just to keep the two apart.
The second-generation Altima got a credited interior designer, Diane Allen, whose redesign brought a revised glovebox, cupholders, a folding back seat, and depowered airbags.
