After Lincoln dropped the Aviator, the Mountaineer quietly became Lincoln-Mercury's flagship SUV — and unlike most other Mercurys, it wasn't axed early; it simply ended when Mercury itself did.

This Mountaineer shared its platform and doors with the Explorer, but Mercury gave it its own fenders, hood, bumpers, and lights to dodge the rebadge-SUV label.

Mercury missed its own sales targets for this Mountaineer — and still outsold the Oldsmobile Bravada, the SUV that got to the segment first, by a wide margin.
