Lotus built the Esprit V8's engine with up to 507 PS on tap — then deliberately detuned it to 355 PS, because the car's own gearbox couldn't survive the full output.
The exotic Lotus Esprit's X180 facelift borrowed its rectangular tail lights from a decidedly unexotic donor: a mid-1980s Toyota Corolla Levin AE86.
Lotus kept refining the Giugiaro-styled Esprit right to the end — the final versions, badged 'HC' for their higher compression ratios, arrived in April 1986, a year before the whole shape was redesigned.
