This Dakota quietly took a step backward on purpose: it dropped the previous generation's six-lug wheels for five-lug hubs, trading a bit of toughness for cheaper, faster assembly.

Dodge squeezed a 5.9-litre Magnum V8 into the compact Dakota for the R/T package — good for 0-60 in 6.9 seconds, genuine muscle-truck pace in a class mostly about hauling mulch.

The first-gen Dakota convertible quietly outlived its own cancellation: Dodge built eight more for 1991 just to honor a contract with American Sunroof Company. They were never advertised and never appeared in sales literature.
