Blue Bird announced an electric Vision in late 2017, built it in limited special-order numbers in 2018, and put it into mass production in 2019.

In 2009 the Vision became the first factory-produced school bus with a propane-fueled powertrain; earlier propane school buses were aftermarket conversions.
With the Vision, Blue Bird built the first cowled-chassis bus on a proprietary chassis designed and manufactured by the same company.
