A live engine you drive with your thumb

Press Start engine, then hold the throttle pad: higher up is more throttle, and it stays there while your finger does. Shift with your other thumb. Nothing is played back: the engine is simulated live. The crank turns under the torque the cylinders make, each cylinder opens its exhaust at its own crank angle, and the pulses run down real-length headers and pipes, so what you hear is what the engine is doing.

• Neutral: rev it, and hold it on the limiter. Lift at high revs for crackle.
• Gear + to pull away: the clutch slips to launch, then you're driving. Speed, trip and the shift lights follow.
• W16: four turbos that spool with load and blow off when you lift.
• Hear the real one plays a real recording of that kind of engine, so you can compare.
• Keys: ↑ throttle, →/← gears, S start or stop.

The engines are schematic, not any one car's; the motion is slowed so you can follow it. Headphones or a good speaker help: most of a V8's weight is below 100 Hz.
